Orso Major is delighted to add the unique work of Joe Webb to our roster of artists. Joe’s reputation as an artist is fast gaining international repute with a recent retrospective show at the Saatchi Gallery. Joe frequently references mid-century American advertising imagery, as well as those from the golden era of Hollywood movies, and fuses these with barren landscapes or images of space and the universe to create a unique, surreal, often humorous image. Surrealism is clearly a large influence on his artwork, and Magritte is actually playfully referenced in one of his screen-prints. Surprisingly, and to his credit, in this age of Photoshop and easy digital manipulation, Joe prefers to create his original collages for his limited edition screen-prints by hand. Webb states –
“I started making these simple hand-made collages as a sort of luddite reaction to working as a graphic artist on computers for many years. I like the limitations of collage…using found imagery and a pair of scissors, there are no Photoshop options to resize, adjust colours or undo.
My collages work to a basic rule of sourcing just two or three images… with these I can reinvent the original scene to communicate a new idea.
I suppose I’ve become fairly anti-technology… although I now promote my art on websites, own an iPhone and use Facebook…It’s confusing, I wish I had been born 100 years ago.”[contact-form-7 id=”1846″ title=”Contact form 1_copy_copy”]
