God Save the Queen by Julia McKenzie is an original piece of boxed framed art. Using the song as her inspiration, Julia McKenzie presents a collection of items essentially english starting with the pigeon that we see all around. The pigeon is set amongst fragments of items found along the River Thames that have been sewn into the vintage box frame with a map of the Thames Valley forming the background. The collaged bird is set in the frame with other found pieces of London sewn in to add to the narrative.
Artist Julia McKenzie produces work that is about seeking out and examining traces of nature and fragile glimpses of things that have existed, natural or man made in her immediate environment. Working from her South London studio in her garden, much of her work is based on what she finds and sees as she journeys up and down from the house to the studio. Julia McKenzie’s inspiration comes from living in the city and the natural landscapes around us. Her work starts with drawings which evolve into intricately detailed laser cut designs or screen prints, often of the the hidden or concealed insect or bird life that live alongside us in the city
