Godiva by Maria Rivans features a young Joan Collins.
The fantastical prints of Maria Rivans draw the eye and overwhelm the senses with their vivid colours and surreal juxtapositions of iconic images. Inspired by Golden Age Hollywood films and Science Fiction B-movies, her work is both a homage to the past and a creative continuation of familiar stories in an alternative, magical universe. Rivans’ prints use cut outs reminiscent of Dada collages, with the collision between old and new, and the natural and artificial undermining logical representation and embracing chaotic fantasy.
Godiva by Maria Rivans is part of the Pin-up series which has been evolving rapidly. Each individual movie star develops their own firm identity, as if they were a solid memorable character starring in one of Rivans’ invented scripts. These leading ladies have been highly influenced by strong female actors like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford who made a huge impression on the artist when she was a child. The Pin-up characters hold qualities of women who are particularly empowered and have recently been named after famous women explorers and inventors.
The most recent additions to this series by Maria Rivans include Godiva, featuring a young Joan Collins, Sugar Queen featuring Sophia Loren gazing out at the viewer, and Lady Valentina with Jean Simmons; an image widely used in publicity around London in October 2014.
